I’ve recently discovered a couple of secrets about increasing museum enjoyment. The first is membership. In San Francisco, I can purchase two memberships at about ninety bucks each and I get free access to pretty much every museum in the area any time for the entire year. A membership means if you have only 20 minutes and you just happen to be walking by, you can just run in and hit one floor or even one painting. This is essential to combat museum fatigue– the spending of three hours in a museum because you don’t want to waste the twenty bucks you paid to get in. Membership also allows you to get a friend in for free every visit, and again, you can dip in for only 20 minutes if you want. I also always use the recorded audio tour each time now for the featured shows. This makes up for all those art history classes I skipped in college (who knew artists had so many secret mistresses?) And, if the whole thought of paying to see art gets your goat then San Francisco is perfect for you. Just walk along Valencia Street in the Mission and and the walls are covered with art like the picture above.
